Our work is research designed and instructor focused: developed specifically to help adolescents meet the demands of life in, and outside of, school.

Meet the Team

Mary Black

Mary Black works with teachers and principals in creative and strategic planning for curriculum and instruction at schools with diverse student populations. She has years of leadership experience in secondary schools, beginning her educational career as a high school English teacher in an urban high school, also serving as a high school principal. She is currently Program Manager and the Certified SIM Professional Development Leader for the SIM team at Region 13.

Kim Watts

Kim Watts spent 21 years teaching middle school in both inner-city and affluent schools. During her time in the classroom, Kim taught English/Language Arts, brought AVID to her campus as a certified AVID teacher, and taught Capturing Kids’ Hearts Teen Leadership. Kim was the SIM Coordinator for her campus’ Literacy Leadership Team, helping them to implement a school-wide approach to improving literacy using the Strategic Instruction Model. Her campus was recognized by the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning with the distinguished SIM Impact School Award.

Vicky Yarbrough

Vicky Yarbrough began her teaching career in Arkansas as a substitute teacher before moving to Texas in 1993. She taught upper elementary for twelve years with an ELA focus before moving to middle school and teaching 6/7 grade social studies and science for 5 ½ years. Vicky was introduced to SIM as a middle school science teacher, during this time she developed a passion for content literacy which led to her becoming a SIM professional developer. She joined the SIM team at Region 13 in January 2000, where she presently manages professional development and provides PD and instructional coaching.
